Tips for Storing Winter Items

Clear up space in your home by putting your winter items in a storage locker.

Give yourself some extra closet space by storing your winter items.

With the start of summer just around the corner, now is the time to store your winter items. Whether you have storage on your property or a public storage rental, make sure you take the necessary steps to protect the things you plan to store.

Storage Locker Tips

Many people have a self-storage unit that they keep the same things in all year long, while others have a storage locker used to store off-season items. Whatever the reason is for you using a storage facility, there are a few things you should always do. Before putting away items for a few months, take inventory and to save yourself a headache, have a map of where everything is. Label boxes and keep the things you think you may need near the front.

Winter Toys And Tools

If you have winter toys and tools such as snowmobiles and snowblowers, it's probably a safe bet that they haven't been used in a while! To get your snowmobile ready for storage, ensure you have the right fuel in the tank, lubricate all the parts, clean it, and cover it. Like you clean a snowmobile, give your winter tires a good scrub before packing them away in a storage locker.

Free Up Space In Your Closets

A great way to free up storage space in your house and closets is to pack away winter clothes. Putting your winter clothes in storage gives you more room, and it's also an excellent opportunity to filter through your clothes and donate or get rid of items you don't use.

Before taking boxes of clothes to the public storage facility, take a few extra steps to keep your clothes in good condition. Start by washing and drying your clothes. When we say dry, we mean dry; the last thing you want is damp clothing going into storage. Next, fold your clothes and, if possible, store them in vacuum-sealed bags. If you don't have access to vacuum-sealed bags, your next best option is plastic storage bins.

Finally, when placing your belongings in a storage unit, be sure to check on them every so often!
